Your questions?

How do i become a firefighter?
To become a paid firefighter check out the fire services website, www.fire.org.nz or to become a volunteer go to your nearest fire station and see the Chief

Does the siren go a number of times for different call types?
No, ours is set to rise and fall 6 times

Why do you still use the siren to get alerted?
The current paging system has not been signed of as an approved turn out system. The siren goes every time there is a call as a back up. Plus wouldn't it be nice to know help is on the way when your house is on fire.

What do i do if my smoke detector isn't working?
Replace the battery, if that doesn't work replace the smoke detector

How often should i test my smoke alarm?
Weekly, and change the battery yearly, on a day like daylight savings changeover, or a important date in your household

What do i do if my fire extinguisher isn't working?
Look in the yellow pages under fire protection for an extinguisher agent

What can i do if my child or a child i know is lighting fires?
Contact your nearest fire station, and they will put you in touch with a fire safety officer who will help you out.

Do i need a permit to light a controlled fire?
Contact Barrie Herlihy at the South Waikato District Council, and he wil fill you in on all the details.

When i see an emergency vehicle approaching with its lights and siren on,what should i do?
For Fire Engines and Ambulances you are required to pull over and make way, try not to suddenly brake when you see us, and if we pull up beside you at an intersection wait until we have cleared the intersection before you proceed as sometimes we might go around you. For police cars you are requred to pull over to the left and stop.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact us or any other fire station, they are more than happy to help you.
